TEXT: PRECALCULUS: A Graphing Approach, Prentice Hall Inc., $87.97

OVERVIEW: Topics in first semester include a rigorous view of polynomial, rational, exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions. Chapters P-5 will be covered. Honors Pre Calculus addresses the following objective numbers on the Georgia High School Graduation Test: 1-11, 13-23, 25-32, and 37-45.

MATERIALS: Textbook, notebook, pencil, pen, are required and a TI83+ or TI84+ graphing calculator is recommended.

HOMEWORK: Homework will be assigned daily. It is to be done in pencil! Problems are to be copied from the text and complete work is to be shown. Homework will be corrected the following day in class. Students are expected to correct their mistakes in pen, with proper work shown. LATE HOMEWORK WILL NOT RECEIVE CREDIT! Frequent homework quizzes will be given.

QUIZZES: Quizzes may be announced or unannounced.

TESTS: A test will be given at the end of each chapter. If a chapter is quite long, 2 tests may be given. Any student absent the review day will be expected to take the test on the scheduled day.

FINAL EXAM: There will be a cumulative final exam at the end of the semester.

GRADES: Grading Scale: Final Grade:
90-100% A Final Exam 15%
80 - 89% B Chapter Tests 55%
70 – 79% C Homework 15%
Below 70% F Quizzes 15%

EXTRA HELP: I am available most mornings or by appointment.

ATTENDANCE: Regular attendance in this class is essential in order for each student to be successful. In the event of an unexpected absence, it is the student’s responsibility to find out the work to be made up and have it completed in a timely fashion. If absence is due to a field trip or TAG, it is the student’s responsibility to get the assignment ahead of time and have it completed upon their return to class.

MAKE – UP WORK: If a student misses the day before a test, he/she is expected to take the test as scheduled. When only the day of a test is missed, the student must be prepared to take the test during the next class period he/she is present. Any other work missed due to extended absences can be made up before or after school by appointment.



CONDUCT: All students are expected to treat everyone with respect. One person talks at a time. Appropriate language is expected at all times. Be ready to start class when the bell rings. You will be marked tardy if you are not in your assigned seat when the bell rings. No food or drinks in class except bottled water.

Provision for Improving Grades
1. Opportunities designed to allow students to recover from a low
or failing cumulative grade will be allowed when all work required
to date has been completed and the student has demonstrated
a legitimate effort to meet all course requirements including
attendance. Students should contact the teacher
concerning recovery opportunities. Teachers are expected to
establish a reasonable time period for recovery work to be completed
during the semester. All recovery work must be directly related to
course objectives and must be completed ten school days prior to
the end of the semester.

2. Teachers will determine when and how students with extenuating
circumstances may improve their grades.


Chattahoochee High School Mathematics Department Guidelines:
Recovery is available to students with a cumulative grade below 74% after a minimum of two (2) major grades. The maximum grade a student can earn for a recovery activity is 70%. There will be only one recovery opportunity per failed major assignment or test. The individual teacher will determine the means of recovery. THE STUDENT MUST INITIATE THE PROCESS WITHIN FIVE (5) DAYS OF NOTIFICATION OF A FAILING GRADE ON A MAJOR ASSIGNMENT/TEST.


PARENT CONNECT: Parent connect (http://chattahoocheepc.fultonschools.org/ ) is a software program available to allow parents to keep up with their student’s grades. Parents may check grade summaries and dates of upcoming tests. Please, remember that it may take several days to actually enter the grades into the system.

USE OF GRAPHING CALCULATORS: Graphing calculators are powerful mathematical tools. Through their use students can visualize problems more quickly, discover mathematical properties, and validate their work done with pencil and paper. They MUST be used appropriately. Graphing calculators are NOT substitutes for students learning mathematical concepts and processes. They are to be used to enhance student learning. I have a set of graphing calculators for students to use while in my classroom. In order to ensure security, students will use only my TI83+ calculators on all tests and quizzes when graphing calculators are allowed.
Game playing during class is NOT an appropriate use of the graphing calculator and it will not be permitted. If a student is found playing a game on a graphing calculator, I will clear the memory of the calculator and decide if further disciplinary action is warranted.

Dear Parents:

I am looking forward to a successful year in HONORS PRECALCULUS. Your son or daughter has received a copy of our course syllabus, explaining the procedures and policies for the class. I would appreciate it if you would read the syllabus so that you are familiar with the expectations for this course.

Along with your acknowledgement of reading the syllabus, I am requesting a daytime phone number where at least one parent can be reached and permission to email progress reports home. This will allow me to update you concerning your child’s progress during my workday, if necessary. Your child’s first assignment is to parents send me an email so that I am sure to have the correct addresses entered. Simply place your child’s name and period number in the subject line. You do not have to do anything else. If you do not have an email address please write a note stating that you don’t have one, sign it and return it to me.
