Calculus Fall

CALCULUS
Fall Syllabus 2007
Mrs. Engelberth
engelberth@fulton.k12.ga.us

Textbook: Calculus: Graphical, Numerical, Algebraic, Prentice Hall ($61.47)

Overview: This course is a complete differential and integral Calculus course. This semester we will cover a review of pre-calculus topics, limits, derivatives and applications of derivatives.

Attendance: Regular attendance in this class is essential in order for each student to be successful. In the event of an unexpected absence, it is the student’s responsibility to check the assignment sheet for missed work and complete it in a timely fashion. If absence is due to a field trip or or other planned event, it is the student’s responsibility to get the assignment ahead of time and have it completed upon their return to class. If a student misses the day before a test, he/she is expected to take the test as scheduled. When only the day of a test is missed, the student must be prepared to take the test during the next class period he/she is present. Any other work missed, due to an extended absence, can be made up before or after school by appointment.

Extra Help: I am available most mornings or by appointment.

Behavior: You are expected to comply will all the behavior rules as stated in your student handbook. In particular, students are expected to be in class on time and in their seats before the tardy bell rings. CHS tardy policy will be enforced. No food or drink is allowed except water.

Grading Policy: Your semester grade will be based on the following:
Major tests 50%
Quizzes 20%
Homework and homework quizzes 15%
Final exam 15%

Some quizzes may be open notes, so note taking is imperative. Expect some homework every night, but it will not necessarily be checked every day. You will be given a current grade after each test. If your average is below a 74%, you may be required to have it signed by a parent or guardian.

Graphing Calculators: Graphing calculators will be used regularly in this course. Only the TI-83 or TI84 will be allowed on assessments. If you use your own calculator on a quiz or test, the memory may be erased before and after the test for security reasons. Game playing is not allowed at any time.

Parent Connect: Parent Connect (http://chattahoocheepc.fultonschools.org/ ) is a software program available to allow parents to keep up with their student’s grades. Parents may check grade summaries and dates of upcoming tests. Please, remember that it may take several days to actually enter the grades into the system.

FULTON COUNTY RECOVERY POLICY:
(High School version)
Provision for Improving Grades
1. Opportunities designed to allow students to recover from a low
or failing cumulative grade will be allowed when all work required
to date has been completed and the student has demonstrated
a legitimate effort to meet all course requirements including
attendance. Students should contact the teacher
concerning recovery opportunities. Teachers are expected to
establish a reasonable time period for recovery work to be completed
during the semester. All recovery work must be directly related to
course objectives and must be completed ten school days prior to
the end of the semester.

2. Teachers will determine when and how students with extenuating
circumstances may improve their grades.

Chattahoochee High School Mathematics Department Guidelines:
Recovery is available to students with a cumulative grade below 74% after a minimum of two (2) major grades. The maximum grade a student can earn for a recovery activity is 70%. There will be only one recovery opportunity per failed major assignment or test. The individual teacher will determine the means of recovery. THE STUDENT MUST INITIATE THE PROCESS WITHIN FIVE (5) DAYS OF NOTIFICATION OF A FAILING GRADE ON A MAJOR ASSIGNMENT/TEST.

My goal is for us to have the best year ever; to help you prepare for Calculus in college next year.

Dear Parents:

I am looking forward to a successful year in CALCULUS. Your son or daughter has received a copy of our course syllabus, explaining the procedures and policies for this class. I would appreciate it if you would read the syllabus so that you are familiar with the expectations for this course.

Along with your acknowledgement of reading the syllabus, I am requesting a daytime phone number where at least one parent can be reached and permission to email progress reports home. This will allow me to update you concerning your child’s progress during my workday, if necessary. Your child’s first assignment is to have parents send me an email so that I am sure to have the correct addresses entered. Simply place your child’s name and period number in the subject line. You do not have to do anything else. If you do not have an email address please write a note stating so, sign it and return it to me.

I am looking forward to a great year in CALCULUS!
Thank you for you cooperation,

“I have read the CALCULUS course syllabus.”
